Here at Eyestore we like to think of it as part of an annual body check up. Gradual changes in vision and eye health may not be blatantly obvious and some changes can lead to major vision loss or poor eye health. Often changes are painless and may only occur in one eye hence patients may miss the early signs. Let us do the work and worrying for you.
A general eye examination involves assessing your vision and ocular health and so we recommend it every 1-2 years. Little ones should be examined before starting preschool at about 3 years old and should be reassessed at regular intervals. If you are a contact lens wearer, a Diabetic, have a history of Glaucoma or other eye diseases then annual checkups are recommended. At your next visit, our Optometrists will advise you how often you will need to be reassessed and we will send out reminder letters accordingly.
Both optometrists and GPs are both qualified to diagnose eye problems. The key difference is that Optometrists have specialized training and equipment in the practice to assist in the diagnosis of eye conditions and will work with GPs and Eye Specialists for the best possible outcome.
You can bring your child in for a test as early as 6 months and no later than 3 years old for a first time check up. Eye exams for infants and toddlers are not the same as adults. The tests performed are more objective and so we examine their vision, the health of the eyes and how well the eyes worth together. We try to make it a happy experience for them which means there is often a jellybean (or two) by the time it’s done.
Good vision is priceless so we bulk bill where possible, which means that if you are an Australian resident with a valid Medicare card, an eye test will not cost you anything. If you are an overseas student, visitor or without a Medicare card please contact us for the type of consultation required. Contact lens consultations are generally not covered under Medicare and will depend on the type of lens required as to the fee that is charged. Please contact us so we can give you more detailed information.
Because we all lead busy lives, making an appointment is recommended. A referral is not necessary. Appointments are usually made on the half hour and go for approx. 20-30 minutes. If you require a new pair of specs, remember to leave extra time after the consult for frame selection. We promise to turn the whole store around to find THAT perfect pair for you. For appointments please call: Eyestore Bankstown (02) 9708 1266 Eyestore Warilla (02) 4296 4449
Other than your friendly smile, please bring along current glasses or prescription, knowledge of family history health, a list of current medication, valid Medicare card, health fund card and other concession cards.
Short for Optical Coherence Tomorgraphy, is a medical imaging technique used to assess ocular structures. It allows the Optometrist to see the eye in greater detail and helps in diagnosing and monitoring eyes diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. An OCT scan can be upgraded to any eye exam.
Retinal photos are taken to assist in documenting and monitoring the intricate details in the back of your eye. We need to carefully monitor conditions such as glaucoma, diabetes and macular degeneration for subtle changes overtime. Retinal photos can accurately document the size and changes of any unusual findings.
CONTACT LENSES
Due to the advances in modern technology, almost everyone can wear contact lenses nowadays. We are spoilt for choice as there are numerous brands in the market. Trust in us to find the perfect design and fit to suit you.
Yes. We recommend you wear your contact lenses to see us if this is part of your daily ritual. If you are a part time wearer/ occasional wearer you can wear them with you and bring along your glasses as well. If you are a new patient to the store then it is helpful to bring the current packaging or boxes for our Optometrist to note. Do not wear your contacts if your eyes are infected or have red, discharge or painful symptoms. In that case, call us straight away to make an appointment. Run. Don’t walk.
Others
Eye drops are often used to increase the size of the pupil in order to get a better view of the inside of the eye. This dilatation generally causes patients to be very sensitive to light and causes blurry vision and can take anywhere from 2- 6 hours to wear off. We recommend you not to drive and to organize a lift if possible. Drops can also be used to relax the focusing muscle of the eye to help determine the patient’s prescription. This is common in diagnosing kids with far sighted… Other drops can be used to make numb the surface of the eye to make it easier to perform some eye tests such as measuring eye pressure. In all cases, we will let you know if we need to do any of the above. No surprises.
Eye checks can be done anytime during a pregnancy. They are recommended if you experience fluctuations in your vision often caused by hormonal and fluid changes. Hypertension and diabetes are also risks during pregnancy and can be picked up during consult. Your vision typically will stabilize 3 months post partum so best to wait until then to get glasses. We will also be more than happy to coo over bubs whilst you find your special pair of specs.
Theoretically no, as there is no evidence to suggest that reading in poor light will physically change the eye. But don’t go running to ipad and iphone just yet because reading in poor lighting conditions will cause unnecessary strain on your eyes and its muscles. So in our opinion - bright light is best. Also remember to take rest breaks every half hour or so for your eyes to calibrate.
GLASSES
Good question as we hear this sentiment from time to time. Please allow us to explain. Think of how many pairs of shoes you have. Now compare that with how many pairs of glasses and sunglasses you own. The first most always outweighs the latter. Yet vision is our most precious asset. We need to protect it. Glasses are expensive depending on the value you put on them. To us, good vision is priceless so purchasing a quality pair of specs to wear everyday divided by the lifespan of the frame amounts to less than a few dollars a day. Plus quality frames and lenses last the distance and feel better on. Now that’s what you pay for – comfort and quality.
Yes, we all agree that the online world offers convenience. Quick, cheap and delivered straight to your door. However every pair of glasses is a custom made item. Here at Eyestore every pair is made with love. There are so many things to consider in a pair of specs - not only are there different frame materials, different lens designs and lens coatings, every face are unique in its head and eye measurements. There are a lot of different measurements we need to take to ensure a proper fit. We offer unlimited adjustments and cleaning for the frame. A four week prescription guarantee. A twelve month manufacturing warranty and a shop front to come to if you are having any issues. Service to us does not stop when the glasses leave our doors. It goes beyond. Most importantly we will walk through with you purchasing a pair of glasses with ease. Use us. That’s what we are here for.
When not using your glasses we recommend the glasses be put back in the case. That way there will be less chance of the frame getting out of shape and scratches when it’s hooked onto the shirt pocket or thrown in the handbag. Only use recommended lens sprays (sold in most optical stores) and a micro fibre cloth when cleaning frames. Harsh chemicals such as acetone and methylated spirits should never be used as they can damage the lens and its anti reflective coatings. During the summer months we recommend not to leave glasses in a car because the car can act as an oven trapping heat and can warp a frame out of shape. Prolonged heat can also damage the coatings the lens. Care for your glasses and you will be able to enjoy them for many years.
